Historic Ritz Hotel in Sea Point Finds Buyer, May Soon Reopen

by Angela

The Ritz Hotel, a once-famous landmark on Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard, may soon see a revival after years of sitting empty.

Known for its modern design and a unique revolving restaurant with panoramic city views, the Ritz was a popular destination in its prime—reportedly enjoying an 80% occupancy rate during its heyday.

The hotel underwent major renovations in 2018 and was set to reopen with great excitement. However, those plans collapsed when the Cape Town High Court ruled that the management company had failed to pay required fees to the building’s owner, Ritz Plaza. As a result, the hotel has remained closed since July 2018.

Now, property broker Ash Müller has revealed that the building has been sold for a reported R240 million, sparking fresh interest in the property’s future.

The news even drew a personal reaction from Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis. “My wife and I ate dinner at the revolving restaurant on the night we got engaged,” he shared. “I really hope to see this old gem revived.”

With the sale complete, many in Cape Town are watching closely to see what comes next for one of the city’s most iconic hotels.
