The Russell Boutique Hotel has officially reopened in The Rocks following a meticulous renovation of the heritage-listed 19th-century building situated at the corner of George Street and the cobblestoned Globe Street in Sydney.
Originally serving as a hospital in the 1800s, the property has been carefully updated to ensure its preservation for decades to come, while seamlessly blending its historic character with modern comforts.
The hotel features 28 uniquely sized and designed rooms, each adorned with striking wallpaper—many inspired by Australiana themes. Custom-made upholstered bedheads, bespoke joinery, elegant curtains, and refurbished bathrooms have revitalised each space without compromising its heritage.
Steve Speed, involved in the project, emphasized the importance of honoring the building’s rich history and The Rocks’ culturally significant surroundings.
“The Russell Boutique Hotel remains, at its core, a hotel steeped in history, and that’s something we were committed to honouring throughout this renovation,” Speed said.
“Each room features antique furniture pieces that complement original architectural elements such as ornate marble fireplaces, detailed architraves, and functioning pull-up windows.
“Imagine waking up in a centuries-old building, in one of Sydney’s most historic precincts, just steps away from iconic Australian landmarks.”
